Malaria: '700 million cases' stopped in Africa

Nearly 700 million cases of malaria have been prevented in Africa as a result of concerted efforts to tackle the disease since 2000, a study shows.

The report published in the journal Nature showed that overall the number of infections fell by 50% across the continent.

Jos Islamic school collapse kills Nigerian children

Of the 22 suspended lower court judges, 14 have filed a writ to the high court, saying the judicial council's investigations have no basis in law.

Egypt's government has resigned and the country's oil minister has been asked to form a new cabinet within a week, the office of President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has said.

Mohammud Modibbo was unable to go to school as a child because he worked as a trader, travelling around the country.

He decided to enter primary school in his mid-80s and had recently begun secondary school in the northern city of Kano.

Burundi army chief Gen Niyongabo survives assassination bid

 Burundi's army chief of staff has survived an assassination attempt on a busy road in the capital, Bujumbura.

General Prime Niyongabo was heading to his office in the morning when armed men attacked his motorcade.

Burundi's deputy police chief Gen Godefroid Bizimana told the AFP news agency the army chief was unharmed.

Six African countries, including Malawi and Mozambique, have been ranked among the 10 worst places to grow old, according to HelpAge International.

The charity's Global Age Watch Index measured the social and economic welfare of those over 60 in 96 nations.

Switzerland topped the list and Afghanistan came last.

It measured income security, health and whether someone had access to public transport, social connections as well as their physical safety.
